Altitude sickness is a form of illness caused by the body's inability to adapt to the low oxygen levels and air pressure of high mountains. Also known as acute mountain sickness, it affects many hikers and climbers. The oxygen level begins to fall from a height of 3,000 meters. So at altitudes above 3,000 meters, altitude sickness can affect hikers below. Symptoms correlated with acute mountain sickness include headache, fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness, lack of sleep or insomnia, loss of appetite, etc. When traveling to Annapurna Base Camp, remember the following tips to avoid altitude sickness:

  • Keep yourself hydrated when hiking and stay away from alcohol because it dehydrates you.
  • Maintain a healthy diet throughout the trip.
  • Diamox, the most effective medicine for altitude sickness, should be brought along on the hike.
  • Don't hurry when hiking to a high altitude. You ought to walk carefully and slowly.
  • Before hiking at an elevation of more than 3,000 meters, acclimatize appropriately.
  • If your body reveals any symptoms of altitude sickness, you must either stop immediately or lower some elevation.
  • Keeping yourself clean may also help you avoid altitude sickness.

Swayambhu Nath: This 2,000-year-old hilltop stupa is the world's grandest Buddhist shrine and is surrounded by several small pagodas. The lid of the main temple is a gilded copper brash and the all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha are painted on its four sides.

Pashupatinath: The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is the holiest and most famous temple in Nepal. Located 5 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, it is an impressive pagoda-style structure with a gilded roof and richly carved silver doors. There are baths and cremation places, which are of interest to tourists especially in the morning and during festival days.
